Research Statement:
The research activities of Waite include the molecular,
structural and mechanical characterization of self-assembling and self-healing
protein materials in nature. These materials include marine adhesives, byssal
fibers, egg capsules and invertebrate jaws. In recent years, his work has
mainly focused on the mechanism by which the coordination compounds formed
between amino acid side chains and transition metals serve as reversible,
surrogate cross-linking agents in proteins.
