Research Statement:
The research activities of Prof. Paul Hansma include the
development and testing of prototype Atomic Force Microscopes and other Scanning
Probe Microscopes. In recent years, his work has mainly focused on the development
of a new generation of Atomic Force Microscopes, based on small cantilevers,
that will be capable of imaging at rates of over 10 frames/second (in contrast
to current commercial instruments that typically take 1 minute/frame). His
group has tested these microscopes on biomineralized samples and, in collaboration
with Professor Morse and Professor Stucky and others, obtained insights into
nature's strategies that are already being used for developing synthetic materials.
He looks forward to obtaining new insights from new samples.
